Introduction

In the world of log and timber home construction, few topics generate more discussion than kiln-dried logs. Kiln drying is often promoted as the gold standard for controlling moisture, minimizing settling, and speeding up the building process. While kiln-dried logs can be appropriate in certain construction methods, at True North Log & Timber Homes we have intentionally chosen a different path. 

Our decision not to use kiln-dried logs is rooted in decades of experience, proven performance, and a deep respect for how wood naturally behaves over time. Quality, longevity, and structural integrity come first, and our building system reflects that commitment.

What Does Kiln-Dried Mean in Log Construction? 

Kiln-dried logs are placed in a controlled environment where heat and airflow rapidly reduce the moisture content of the wood. The goal is to stabilize the logs before construction begins, limiting movement once the home is built. 

While kiln drying can reduce initial shrinkage, it also introduces stresses into the wood fibers. These stresses are not always visible at the time of construction, but they can influence long-term performance in ways that are often overlooked. 

Why Some Manufacturers Choose Kiln-Dried Wood

In the Midwest and on the West Coast, some log manufacturers rely on standing-dead trees harvested from forests heavily impacted by insect infestations. Because these trees can still contain live insects and larvae, kiln-drying is often used to eliminate any remaining pests before the logs are processed. Some manufacturers even promote this raw material source as a benefit, positioning it as a lower-cost option for building a log home. While it can reduce material costs, this approach reflects a very different philosophy around sourcing, quality, and long-term performance.  

Why True North Uses Air-Dried Logs

Wood Performs Best When It Dries Naturally

Wood is a living material that responds to its environment. When logs are kiln-dried, moisture is removed quickly and artificially. This process can weaken the natural fiber structure and increase the likelihood of checking and internal stress over time. 

True North’s air-drying process allows logs to dry gradually. This natural approach preserves the integrity of the wood, resulting in logs that age gracefully and perform reliably for generations.

Kiln-Dried Logs Are Not Necessary in a Properly Engineered System  

Many builders rely on kiln-dried logs to compensate for construction systems that do not account for natural movement. At True North, our proprietary log and timber home system is engineered to manage settling in a predictable and controlled way. For example, although all logs continue to shrink over time, air-dried logs shrink in a more even manner. Our homes are designed to strategically utilize the way that all logs shrink over time. For example, the angle of our dovetail corners ensures that as the logs shrink, they are drawn tighter together over time. This eliminates the need for chinking.  

Ultimately, all our design details, joinery, and fastening systems allow the structure to adjust naturally as the logs acclimate. This eliminates the need to force stability through kiln drying and creates a home that remains tight, strong, and structurally sound over time. 

Kiln-Drying is an Energy-Intensive Process 

Due to the extremely high temperatures required and the large volume of wood processed at once, kiln-drying is an exceptionally energy-intensive practice that relies heavily on fuel and electricity over extended periods of time. At True North Log & Timber Homes, we take a more responsible approach by air drying our logs naturally. This method significantly reduces energy consumption, lowers emissions, and aligns with our commitment to minimizing our carbon footprint while building high-performance homes that respect the environment. 

Better Long-Term Performance in Real-World Conditions 

Kiln-dried logs may appear stable when they leave the kiln, but once they are exposed to real-world humidity, seasonal changes, and climate variations, they continue to move. In some cases, kiln-dried wood can reabsorb moisture unevenly, leading to twisting, cracking, or internal stress. 

By allowing logs to dry naturally from the start, True North homes respond more predictably to environmental conditions. This results in a structure that performs as intended year after year.
