Where you grew up often has a lot to do with it. So does the landscape around you.
For some, “the cottage” immediately brings to mind summer days on the water. For others, it’s the cabin in the woods, camp on the lake, a mountain retreat or simply the lake house.
At True North Log & Timber Homes, we design custom homes for people across Canada, the United States and beyond. And while we’ve discovered that people don’t always agree on what to call them, the dream behind them is remarkably similar.
A beautiful piece of land.
A home that belongs there.
And a place you can’t wait to get back to.
Different Places. Different Names.
The language surrounding recreational homes is incredibly regional.
“Cottage” is deeply rooted in many parts of Canada and the northeastern United States.
“Cabin” is common throughout Western Canada, the American Midwest and mountain regions.
“Camp” has strong traditions in places like Northwestern Ontario and the Adirondacks, where the historic Great Camps took wilderness living to an entirely different level.
In other places, lake house, chalet, mountain home, retreat or lodge simply feels more natural.
None of them is necessarily more correct than another.
They’re different words that have developed around different landscapes, traditions and ways of enjoying the outdoors.
A Cabin Doesn’t Have to Be Small
The names can also be misleading.
Mention a cabin and one person might picture a one-room building deep in the woods.
Someone else might picture an extraordinary custom home overlooking a mountain lake.
A cottage might be a simple summer getaway or a substantial waterfront residence designed to accommodate several generations of a family.
A camp might be rustic and remote, or an impressive Adirondack property filled with craftsmanship and architectural detail.
The name doesn’t determine the home.
You do.
That’s one of the reasons we believe so strongly in custom log home design. Your home should be designed around your property, your lifestyle and the way you want to use it, rather than fitting somebody else’s definition of what a log home should be.
The Landscape Usually Comes First
Whatever you call it, these homes often begin with a place.
Maybe you’ve found a quiet piece of waterfront.
Maybe it’s several acres surrounded by forest.
Perhaps it’s a dramatic mountain property, an island, or land that’s already been in your family for generations.
The property becomes part of the architecture.
Where does the sun rise?
Where will everyone gather at the end of the day?
Which view deserves the biggest windows?
Where should the deck or screened porch be?
How do you make the home feel connected to everything around it?
These are the questions that turn a building into something that truly belongs on its property.

Rustic Isn’t the Only Option
There’s another idea we’d like to challenge.
A log home doesn’t have to look like a traditional rustic cabin.
It certainly can.
But it can also be contemporary, refined, dramatic, understated or somewhere in between.
Natural log walls can sit alongside stone, glass, steel and contemporary finishes. Open-concept living spaces can meet soaring timber ceilings. Expansive windows can make the landscape part of the interior.
That’s the beauty of custom.
You aren’t choosing a style called “log home.”
You’re designing your home and deciding how log and timber architecture become part of it.
